FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most often.
Who do you work with?
We work with individuals, families, self-employed people and small to medium-sized businesses across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Our clients come from a wide range of industries, and we tailor our work to each person's or company's situation.
Do you prepare both personal and corporate tax returns?
Yes. We prepare personal (T1) returns for individuals and families, and corporate (T2) returns for incorporated businesses. Many clients use us for both their personal and business filings so everything is handled in one place.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your most recent tax return and Notice of Assessment, any tax slips you've received (such as T4s, T5s or RRSP receipts), and records of income and expenses if you're self-employed or own a business. If you're not sure whether something is relevant, bring it and we'll sort through it together.
Can you help if I'm behind on filing past tax returns?
Yes. We can help you gather what's needed and prepare and file outstanding returns for previous years. Getting caught up sooner generally makes the process simpler, so it's worth calling us to talk through where you stand.
Can you help if I receive a letter or review from the CRA?
Yes. Bring or send us the letter and we'll explain what the CRA is asking for and help you prepare the information or response they need. Try not to wait until a deadline is close, as reviews often have specific response dates.
Do you offer bookkeeping and payroll for small businesses?
Yes. We provide ongoing bookkeeping and payroll management for small businesses, including recording transactions, reconciling accounts, processing payroll and handling the related remittances and year-end slips.
Do I need an accountant if I'm self-employed or a sole proprietor?
It isn't required, but self-employed returns involve business income, expenses and often GST/HST, which can be easy to get wrong. An accountant can help you keep proper records, claim the expenses you're entitled to and file correctly and on time.
When should I start preparing for tax season?
The best time is early in the year, as soon as your tax slips start arriving in February. Keeping your records organized throughout the year makes filing much easier, and planning ahead before year-end can help you make better tax decisions.
